Beam and plate systems function well for extended length projects.  When using the beam and plate system, steel beams are driven into the ground using excavator mounted hammers or can be augured into the ground which helps promote an easier installation and removal.  After the beams are driven into the ground, steel plates are inserted along the steel channels of the beam to provide the necessary protection for the soil wall.  The system requires site specific engineering to meet OSHA requirements.  In some cases the system will require walers to be used, or support mechanisms fabricated, to safely support the excavation walls.  The system is thus able to provide an open span excavation with optimal working room.

Beam and panel is similar to the beam and plate system.  The system is composed of steel I-beams and steel trench shield panels.  Steel beams are once again driven into the ground.  The trench shield panels are then inserted behind the beams to provide the soil protection.  The system does require site specific engineering.

Pipe and plate is a variation of the beam and plate system.  It is also well suited for extended projects.  Steel pipe is driven into the ground using excavated mounted hammers and steel plate is inserted behind the pipe.   The system also requires site specific engineering.  The pipe and plate system is much the same concept as this, with the plate being exchanged for steel trench shield panels and inserted behind the steel pipe.
