Steel manhole shields are static implements that accept a trench cave-in, as opposed to a hydraulic systems which prevent a cave-in. Steel manhole shields, like steel trench shields, are designed to
prevent the lateral movement of soil. Steel manhole shields are one of the heavier systems and require the proper lifting equipment for the installation process.
Steel manhole shields can be obtained in a variety of sizes to meet jobsite requirements. The shields are available in 4 and 8 feet heights with dimensions ranging from 8 feet to 12 feet. The shields are available in either flat bottom or knife-edge bottom varieties. Additionally, the manhole shield comes with optional cut-outs along the panel to allow it to accept pipe in more than one direction. When not in use the cut-outs can be covered with steel plates to prevent soil raveling.
Steel manhole shields are commonly employed in manhole installations, small wet well installations and other similar types of excavation.
