The Specifics

The contractor was performing a storm drain expansion project.  The need for the project had arisen as a result of increased development of the area and additional apartments being added to the area.  The project would require an excavation of approximately 3 to 4 feet wide and a depth of 12 to 14 feet with varying lengths of linear runs.  The project would occur in a sand and clay soil mixture that had been classified as C-60 by the contractor's competent person.  The excavation would occur alongside a roadway that would need to be accounted for with the shoring system selected.

The Scenario
The contractor wanted a system that was lightweight and that could be easily installed by the equipment operator.  In addition, the system would also need some form of end closure along one side of the area to effectively provide three sided protection.

The Solution
Coble Trench Safety met with the contractor and discussed the contractor's desires for a shoring system and helped to work within these conditions when proposing shoring alternatives for the project.  After the consideration of several ideas, the contractor selected to use aluminum trench shields coupled to provide the shoring for the project.  The aluminum trench shield is a lightweight system that is fairly adaptable as it can provide soil support in a range of widths for each spreader length, as opposed to the static width protection provided by steel trench shields.

In addition to the flexible widths, the system also helped to address the issue of end closure for the project.  Aluminum trench shields can be equipped with end panel kits that bolt onto one or both ends of an aluminum trench shield.  The end panel kit contains sheeting that is inserted along the brackets of the end panel kit and provides a third wall of protection for a worker.

The contractor was very satisfied with Coble Trench Safety's ability to deliver the equipment promptly as well as the on-hand inventory of aluminum shoring products that helped to make for a smooth project.
