Steel Trench and Manhole Shields Help Solve Contractor's Shoring Needs

The Specifics

The contractor was part of a larger project to improve a center for the arts in a North Carolina metropolitan area.  This particular project focused on a pipe and manhole installation that is being done to connect the art center's storm drain to the existing city infrastructure, which is part of a very complex underground retention pond system that collects the excess rain.

The soil was a clay mixture that had been classified as C-60.  The excavation would span several feet of pipe and see the installation of a few manholes in depths ranging from 8 to 12 feet.

The Scenario
The project did not present any unusual challenges when designing the shoring system.  The contractor just needed a system that would protect the workers, be easy to work with and fit within the scope of the job.

The Solution
Casey Willett met with the contractor during the bid phase and began to help the contractor firm up shoring needs for the project.  After a brief discussion of possible shoring alternatives, the contractor elected to used steel trench shields for the linear runs of pipe and steel manhole shields for the manhole installations.  The shields provide a sturdy protective system that could be easily installed and that could allow for the efficient placement of the pipe.

The contractor was very satisfied with the equipment, but more importantly impressed with the service provided by Coble Trench Safety.  Throughout the project's life cycle, Casey was meeting with the contractor to help ensure the system would meet the site needs and would be on the jobsite when the contractor needed it.  The experience went very well and the project was completed successfully.
